In a world full of brew pubs on every corner with obnoxiously large burgers with too many toppings, a restaurant that specializes in fried chicken is absolutely refreshing. Add donuts to the mix and you have yourself a genius restaurant idea. Mike’s Donuts and Chicken is a restaurant with a really fun casual atmosphere, the tables and chairs are painted, there’s even a telephone booth inside, even the bathroom has an adorable mural. There’s a bar where you can sit to eat or order donuts and coffee to go.
We started with the Chicken and Donuts ($8.95 – two pickle brined chicken legs fried and served on sprinkle donuts) I didn’t think I would like this, but when the menu has something that strange you have to try it. The verdict? I don’t know if I can have fried chicken without icing and sprinkles again. The pickle brine was incredibly subtle you could barely taste it. The combination of perfectly seasoned fried chicken with a perfectly simple and delicious donut, all of that frosting and the sprinkles it worked so well. They also offer donut glazed wings and if you order chicken tenders you can get a cup of donut glaze to dip them in.
I had the Before & After Chicken Sandwich ($11.95 topped with bacon, Velveeta and a fried egg served with waffle fries or fries) and honestly, I loved that you could choose whether you wanted fried or grilled chicken, chicken breast or thighs, and you could have it served on a bun, biscuit, or wrap. I chose the biscuit and it was phenomenal, the piece of chicken was so large it was almost difficult to eat and there was so much bacon that it was falling out of the sandwich with every bite. The biscuit was perfect, not too dry or crumbly, and it held up to the giant sandwich.
AJ ordered the Hurts Donut ($14.95 – Maple praline bacon glazed long john, filled with dry rubbed pork, fire sauce, jalapenos, coleslaw, and bacon.) he ordered it without coleslaw, and it was a perfectly spicy sandwich, the fire sauce is a very spicy buffalo style sauce, the maple praline bacon glazed long john really helps to mellow out all of the heat.
After all of that donut action we were stuffed and we had to get our donuts to go, we each ordered a Cyclops donut. The donut selection is different every week, and the cyclops donuts are stuffed with frosting in the donut holes, and the donuts themselves taste a lot like funnel cakes, which is always a good thing.
