My favorite part about visiting breweries is that each is so unique, the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Red Eye Brewing Company is their artisanal food. This is not your typical deep fried fare. The restaurant has a great industrial feel with bikes decorating the ceiling. Plus, they have a wonderful staff that love to chat about all things nerdy.
I wish I was in Wausau more often, because I know this would be a place that I would stop frequently for lunches and dinners. Their craft beer is great, and now you can even get it in a crowler (a 32 ounce can) to go.
We started with one of their happy hour small bites, served Monday-Friday from 3-6. The Frite for All ($7 – Frites, house-made beer cheese sauce, cheddar, nueske’s bacon, creme fraiche, and scallion) was the perfect appetizer to share. It was very decadent and cheesy, and the bacon had the perfect amount of smokiness. There was not a crumb left on the plate when we were through.
Their new turkey club, is truly satisfying. Even something as simple as a panini tasted wonderful, you can tell they use local and fresh ingredients. That roasted sweet potato with curry yogurt was an amazing surprise, perfectly roasted, the curry had quite a kick that complimented the sweet potato perfectly. I could have eaten a plate full of these.
The woodfire pizza is incredibly satisfying, we had the fromaggio ($12.50 – Wisconsin cheddar cheese sauce, parmesan, asiago, house-rolled mozzarella and chives) it was the perfect amount of cheese, the cheddar cheese sauce base was perfectly creamy and the bake left a fluffy crust all the way to the ends.
They have great chef specials daily, like this wonderful grilled tuna. Not the presentation you expect from a brewery, right?
Red Eye Brewing Company is a small brewery with pretty impressive beers. The grapefruit gose was incredibly refreshing, and on the other end of the spectrum their 2×4 Belgian Quad packed a boozy punch. they boast a very diverse beer menu, there’s a little something for everyone.
I love that they even have their own little garden for fresh ingredients right outside the door. Next time you find yourself in Northern Wisconsin make a trip to Red Eye Brewing Company 612 Washington St, Wausau, WI 54403.
